Curaçao: My Colorful Dutch Caribbean Love
The sail-in through the narrow channel into Willemstad with Handelskade's rainbow buildings reflecting in the water is hands-down the prettiest port entrance in the Caribbean. My perfect day: off the ship and across the swinging Queen Emma pontoon bridge (it actually floats and swings open – so cool) into Punda for photos, then a free ferry to Otrobanda for the Kura Hulanda slavery museum (powerful and beautifully done).
Lunch is keshi yena (stuffed cheese) and funchi at Plasa Bieu market with the local ladies – incredibly affordable and delicious. Afternoon is a taxi to Playa Porto Marie (entry includes chair and shade) for the best snorkeling right off the beach – I feed the pigs that swim out to you! Sunset at Mambo Beach with happy-hour cocktails watching the lights come on across the city.
Getting Around Curaçao
Mega Pier or Mathey Wharf – 10–15 minute walk to the rif fort and bridge. Taxis to beaches are shareable for groups. Many beaches include transport in the entry fee.
- Punda/Handelskade: 10–15 min walk across Queen Emma Bridge
- Porto Marie Beach: Entry includes chair and shade
- Mambo Beach: Short affordable taxi
Positively Worded Word of Warning
Curaçao's charmingly narrow streets and swinging bridge are the island's way of giving you a free adventure – hold on tight and enjoy the ride!
