Lido Marketplace Review: The Poolside Workhorse

Introduction. Every cruise line has a buffet. Carnival's Lido Marketplace is the one that feeds you at midnight after karaoke, at 6 a.m. before a port day, and three times in between. It's complimentary, it's always open (almost), and it does what it does — volume casual dining with some genuine bright spots buried in the steam trays.

Food & Drinks

The Mongolian Wok station (on ships that have it in-line) and the Indian curry station are the sleeper hits — freshly tossed stir-fry and surprisingly authentic tikka masala that rival the specialty restaurants. The deli sandwich station at lunch makes a solid Reuben. Breakfast is the Lido's strongest meal: made-to-order omelets, decent bacon, and passable hash browns. Pizza is available 24/7 and is... pizza (Pizzeria del Capitano next door is better). Where the Lido struggles: the carved meats at dinner can be dry if you hit the wrong timing, the salad bar wilts by late lunch, and the dessert station is quantity over quality — sheet cakes and soft-serve, not patisserie. It's a buffet. Calibrate accordingly.

Service

Self-serve by design, with staff clearing plates and keeping stations stocked. The crew behind the carving stations and egg stations are often the friendliest people on the ship — ask nicely and they'll load your plate. Drink service is limited to a beverage station (juice, water, coffee, iced tea) or you can grab bar drinks from the nearby pool bar. Lines at peak hours (noon, 6 p.m.) can be significant on sea days — arriving 15 minutes early or late makes a real difference.

Atmosphere

On Excel-class ships (Mardi Gras, Celebration, Jubilee), the Lido has been reworked into distinct food-hall-style stations — less "cruise ship buffet," more "upscale food court." On older ships, it's the traditional two-sided buffet line with a large seating area. Either way, pool-deck seating is available and popular in good weather. Noise level: high. Ambiance: functional. This is not the place for a quiet dinner — it's the place for a fast, efficient, no-reservation meal.

Conclusion

Rating: 3.5/5. The Lido is exactly what it is — a complimentary buffet that peaks at breakfast and Indian food, sags at dinner desserts, and keeps you fed around the clock. It's not romantic, it's not refined, and the seating can feel chaotic on sea days. But the Mongolian Wok stir-fry at 12:30 p.m. with an ocean view? That's a genuinely good lunch. Tip: hit the Lido for breakfast and lunch; save dinner for the MDR or a specialty restaurant.
