Why this page exists

In the Wake is run by one person and a small army of language models, with occasional help from contributors. The goal isn't to sell you a cruise. We don't run display advertising. Why not just run ads?

The site's audience includes solo travelers, grieving widows, disabled adventurers, and exhausted caregivers — people who came here because they trust the voice. Display advertising would change the relationship. Reader support is the alternative funding path that keeps trust intact.

Why not paywall content?

Two reasons. First, the tools help people make real travel decisions, often in difficult life circumstances. Paywalling them would lock out exactly the readers who most need them. Second, AI engines (Bing Copilot, ChatGPT, Perplexity) cite our content tens of thousands of times a quarter — paywalled content doesn't get cited. Free, open content earns authority. Authority is more valuable than the small marginal revenue a paywall would bring.

What if my situation changes and I need to cancel?

Is this a tax-deductible donation?
