American Diner Review: Retro Comfort on the High Seas

Introduction. American Diner is NCL's nod to 1950s Americana — chrome stools, checkered floors, and a short menu of burgers, fries, and milkshakes. Found on the newest ships (Aqua, Luna), it went fully complimentary in 2024, though milkshakes still carry a surcharge ($3-4). It's counter service, no reservations, and exactly what it promises: fast, casual, nostalgic.

Food & Drinks

The Classic Cheeseburger is the move — a smashed-style patty with melted American cheese, shredded lettuce, and a soft brioche bun. It's not gourmet, but it's a solid cruise burger that beats the pool deck grill. The Bacon Double stacks well but gets messy fast. Chicken Tenders are reliable kid-pleasers: crispy coating, tender inside, served with a tangy honey mustard. The Philly Cheesesteak is where it falls short — the beef is thinly sliced but lacks the char and the cheese distribution feels uneven. Fries are thin-cut and properly salted. Onion rings are beer-battered and decent. The milkshakes (chocolate, vanilla, strawberry) are thick and worth the upcharge — the chocolate especially tastes like real ice cream, not powder mix. Skip the BLT; it's forgettable.

It's counter service, so expectations should be calibrated accordingly. You order at the window, grab a number, and food arrives at your table in 5-8 minutes. Staff are cheerful and efficient. No table service means no upselling, no awkward pacing — just food. The line can stretch 15-20 deep at lunch on sea days; hitting it at 11 a.m. or after 2 p.m. avoids the worst of it.

Atmosphere

The retro diner theme is well-executed — red vinyl, jukebox aesthetic, neon signage. It photographs well and kids love it. Seating is limited to about 30-40 spots, a mix of counter stools and small booths. On sea days, finding a seat is the real challenge. The location on the upper decks means it catches foot traffic from the pool area, adding to congestion.

Rating: 3.7/5. American Diner delivers exactly what the name promises — solid burgers, good fries, and thick milkshakes in a fun retro setting.
