Garden Cafe Review: The Buffet That Feeds Everyone

Introduction. Garden Cafe is NCL's main buffet — the complimentary, all-day dining venue that handles the highest volume of any restaurant on the ship. Every Norwegian ship has one. It opens for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, plus late-night snacks. It's the fallback when specialty restaurants are booked and the quick option when you don't want a sit-down meal.

Food & Drinks

Breakfast is the strongest meal: the omelet station produces custom omelets that are genuinely good — fluffy, with a solid selection of fillings. The bacon is crispy (not always a given on cruise buffets), and the pastry selection is decent. Lunch rotates daily with themed stations — the Indian curry station is surprisingly good, with tikka masala that has real depth and properly cooked naan. The carving station (roast beef, turkey) is reliable. Where it falls short: dinner quality drops — the proteins can be overcooked and sitting too long, the pasta station is consistently underwhelming (soggy noodles, bland sauces), and the salad bar, while extensive, uses dressings that taste institutional. The pizza station is mediocre — rubbery crust, not enough sauce. Desserts are quantity over quality, though the soft-serve is a crowd-pleaser. On sea days, the lunch rush (noon-1:30 p.m.) turns the space into controlled chaos.

Service

It's a buffet, so service is primarily self-serve with staff clearing plates and refilling stations. The drink station attendants are efficient. On Prima and Viva, the layout is improved with better flow. On older ships (Jewel, Jade), bottlenecks at popular stations are a real issue. Staff are friendly and will help with dietary questions if you seek them out. Plate clearing is prompt — rarely do dirty plates pile up.

Atmosphere

Garden Cafe is typically on an upper deck with ocean views through large windows — the views are often the best part. On newer ships, the space is bright, modern, and well-organized with distinct stations. On older ships, it can feel cramped and dated. Noise levels are high at peak times — this is not a quiet dining experience. The outdoor seating area (The Great Outdoors on many ships) is the better option in good weather, serving the same food with fresh air and views.
