Sunset Bar Review: The View Does All the Work

Introduction. Sunset Bar is an aft-facing outdoor bar found on select Norwegian ships, positioned to catch the evening sunset over the wake. It's one of the most simply named and honestly positioned venues on any cruise ship — you go here at sunset, you have a drink, you watch the sky. Drinks are standard pricing or covered by the beverage package.

Drinks & Service

Standard NCL bar card — nothing sunset-themed, nothing special. A glass of rosé or a cold beer is the right call here. The Aperol Spritz pairs beautifully with the golden hour. Frozen cocktails feel too poolside for a venue this contemplative. A proper Martini or Old Fashioned works if the bartender isn't rushed (and they usually aren't). Wine by the glass is the Mondavi fleet selection. The bar is small enough that the bartender has time for conversation and custom requests. No signature cocktails — just the same menu as every other bar, served with a view that deserves better.

Service

Bartenders are casual and friendly — the low-traffic nature of the bar (it peaks at sunset and is quiet otherwise) means service is fast and attentive. During the 30-minute sunset window, it fills up and service slows slightly. Outside of that golden hour, you might be the only one there. The intimate size means the bartender has time for conversation.

Atmosphere

The aft location is everything. You're facing the ship's wake, watching it churn and disappear into the distance, with the sky painting itself orange, pink, and purple. The bar is small — maybe 15-20 seats — and entirely outdoors. The design is minimal: a counter, some stools, and the ocean. That's all it needs. The noise of the ship fades here; the wind and waves are the soundtrack. At sunset, it's genuinely moving — one of those cruise moments that justifies the entire vacation. After dark, the bar empties and the stars appear. In the morning, it's peaceful and barely used. Weather-dependent: rough seas or cold ports mean it closes.

Conclusion

Rating: 3.3/5. Sunset Bar has the best view of any bar on the ship and the most generic drink menu. The sunset experience is genuinely wonderful — the bar just doesn't contribute to it beyond pouring standard drinks in a cup. Tip: Arrive 30 minutes before sunset, bring a glass of something you enjoy, and stay until the sky goes dark. Check the ship's compass heading — westbound days on the Caribbean have the best sunsets.
