Whiskey Bar Review: Brown Spirits, Warm Atmosphere

Introduction. The Whiskey Bar is a dedicated whiskey lounge found on select Norwegian ships, separate from the Maltings concept. It stocks a curated selection of whiskeys — Scotch, bourbon, Irish, rye, and sometimes Japanese — in a classic lounge setting. Drinks are standard pricing or covered by the beverage package, with premium pours carrying upcharges.

Drinks & Service

The whiskey selection is curated but narrower than Maltings — typically 20-30 bottles focusing on Scotch (Glenfiddich, Macallan, Laphroaig), bourbon (Maker's Mark, Woodford Reserve, Buffalo Trace), and a few Irish options (Jameson, Redbreast). Japanese whiskey availability varies — Suntory Toki is usually present, Hibiki less reliably. A proper Old Fashioned is the cocktail to order here — the bartender has the time and the ingredients to make it right. Whiskey flights aren't formally on the menu but can be arranged by request. Neat or on the rocks is the standard order. Premium pours carry upcharges; ask before ordering anything top-shelf. Cocktails beyond whiskey-based drinks are available but feel out of place.

Service

Bartenders are knowledgeable about whiskey — they understand the difference between bourbon and rye, can recommend based on your palate, and pour with respect. Service is unhurried and conversational. The smaller size of the bar means you get genuine bartender attention. Regulars develop relationships with the staff quickly. It's one of the bars where the bartender adds to the experience.

Atmosphere

Warm, dark, and intimate — the classic whiskey bar formula executed well. Leather seating, amber-toned lighting, wood paneling, and the glow of backlit bottles. The space is small by design: 15-20 seats maximum, which creates a private-club atmosphere. Conversation is easy; the music is barely there. The crowd is self-selecting — people who sit here actually like whiskey and want to savor it. It's one of the quietest bars on the ship after 9 p.m. The aroma of aged spirits occasionally mingles with the scent of leather. On ships that also have Maltings, the two venues overlap in concept but differ in scale — Whiskey Bar is smaller and more intimate, Maltings is larger with a beer component.

Rating: 3.8/5. The Whiskey Bar delivers a proper whiskey-drinking experience — good selection, knowledgeable bartenders, and a warm, intimate atmosphere. It loses points for premium upcharges, the limited Japanese selection, and the lack of organized tasting experiences. Tip: Ask the bartender for a "three-pour recommendation" — tell them what you normally drink and let them expand your palate. Go after 9 p.m. for the quietest, most atmospheric experience.
