Alaska at Intimate Scale

The mega-ships dwarfed the glaciers. Millennium let the glaciers be enormous.

I'd seen Alaska before on larger vessels—ships carrying four or five thousand passengers, ships so large that Hubbard Glacier became backdrop rather than destination. When you're standing on deck fourteen of a floating city, the glacier doesn't shrink, but your sense of proportion does. The ship becomes the reference point, and the glacier becomes scenery. You're a tourist in a hotel watching nature through the window. The scale works against the experience in ways you don't notice until you try something different.

Celebrity Millennium returned the glaciers to proper proportion and gave me my first genuine encounter with Alaska's wilderness.

At 2,000 passengers, Millennium is intimate by Alaska cruise standards—roughly half the capacity of the mega-ships that dominate the Inside Passage. Fewer people at railings meant I could find viewing positions without competition. Less jostling for sightlines meant I could hold a camera steady. The sense that you were experiencing wilderness rather than viewing it from a floating city changed the entire relationship between ship and landscape.
