Booked! Review: A Musical That Earns Its Standing Ovation

Booked! is a full-length musical production exclusive to Virgin Voyages — a prequel to Lola's Library in which a cursed book unleashes chaos and ship librarian Lola must sing, dance, and fight her way through stories come alive. Performed in The Red Room, the show runs approximately 40 minutes and is included in the fare. It is one of the more traditional "cruise ship show" offerings on Virgin Voyages, blending Broadway-style production numbers with the line's irreverent humor and contemporary design sensibility.

Drinks & Service

Drinks are available from The Red Room bar before the show and during intermission. The espresso martini and the house cocktails are solid picks — nothing groundbreaking, but well-made. Bar Tab applies. Servers do not circulate during the performance itself (the theater format does not accommodate it), so grab your drink beforehand. Where it falls short: the pre-show bar area can get congested when a full house arrives simultaneously, leading to rushed ordering and long lines. Arrive 20 minutes early if you want a drink in hand before curtain.

Service

The front-of-house team manages seating efficiently, and the ushers are helpful in directing guests to the best available seats. The performers are the real stars of the service experience — the cast is talented, energetic, and clearly invested in the show. Audience interaction is minimal but well-calibrated. The production quality (lighting, sound, costumes) is notably higher than typical cruise ship entertainment.

Atmosphere

The Red Room transforms beautifully for Booked! — the staging uses the venue's convertible floor to create an immersive theatrical space. The choreography is tight, the vocal performances are strong, and the storyline (while not deep) is engaging enough to hold attention throughout. The humor lands well with the adults-only audience — slightly edgier jokes that would not fly on a family ship. Where it falls short: the show runs a bit short at 40 minutes, and the narrative wraps up abruptly. Guests who have seen Broadway-caliber shows may find the production polished but not quite at that level. The sound mix can be uneven in certain Red Room seats — center seating is best.

Booked! is one of the strongest traditional entertainment offerings on Virgin Voyages — well-produced, genuinely entertaining, and performed by a talented cast that deserves the standing ovations they regularly receive. It loses points for its short runtime and occasional sound issues. See it on the first night when energy is highest. Tip: sit center, three or four rows back from the stage — the sound and sightlines are best there, and you catch the choreography patterns that are lost from the wings.
